South Korea elects Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party as president in wake of former leader's impeachment

On June 4, local time, the Central Election Commission of South Korea held a plenary meeting and voted to pass the resolution on the results of the general election. According to the results of the general election, Lee Jae-myung, the candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, was officially confirmed as the president-elect. The term of office of the 21st President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung officially began at 6:21 a.m. local time on June 4, and all the inherent powers of the president, including the military commander, automatically transferred to Lee Jae-myung.

 

The Central Election Commission of South Korea issued a certificate of election to Park Chan-dae, the whip of the Democratic Party of Korea and the agent of Lee Jae-myung, the 21st presidential election candidate, at around 7:10 a.m. local time on the 4th.

 

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security of South Korea subsequently stated that the swearing-in ceremony of the 21st President Lee Jae-myung will be held at the National Assembly at 11 a.m. local time on June 4.

 

At around 5:03 a.m. local time on June 4, the counting of votes for the 21st presidential election in South Korea ended. According to the vote counting results, Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung received 49.42% of the votes (17.2875 million votes), People Power Party candidate Kim Moon-soo received 41.15% of the votes, and Reform Party candidate Lee Joon-seok received 8.34% of the votes.

Lee Jae-myung said that after being officially elected, he will work hard to end the current political chaos, boost the Korean economy, and restore the lives of the Korean people to normal as soon as possible. Lee Jae-myung said that he will stabilize the situation on the peninsula as soon as possible, start dialogue with North Korea, and seek win-win results. At the end of his speech, Lee Jae-myung called on the Korean people to bridge their differences and work together.
